Two landmark Dondlinger & Sons projects were recognized at the 2009 Kansas Ready Mix Concrete Association (KRMCA) Municipal Concrete Awards Annual Convention, which was held in Overland Park, Kansas on January 15, 2010. The Kellogg Avenue & Rock Road Interchange project and the Central Corridor Railroad Grade Separation project both received awards in the Municipal Concrete in a Class III Municipality category.
The Central Corridor project was also honored with an award from Kansas Chapter of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) at the Annual Concrete Awards Program held on February 3, 2010 in Manhattan, KS.
The Kellogg Avenue & Rock Road Interchange project involved constructing the new Rock Road Bridge, which is a cast-in-place post tensioned multi-cell concrete box girder single span bridge. The span length is 151 ft. and the bridge is 204 ft. wide and was constructed using over 4,000 cubic yards of concrete. This project was located in East Wichita on Kellogg Avenue (US-54) from Governeor Street to Heather Street. The Kellogg Avenue & Rock Road intersection is one of Wichita’s busiest and was in need of redesign and repair due to heavy traffic volume.
The Central Corridor Railroad Grade Separation project involved extending the elevated portion of the tracks by maintaining the elevated grade of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad (BNSF) from the Union Station at Douglas to 13th Street to provide new grade separations at Central, Murdock, and 13th Streets. This project also involved construction of new railroad bridges over 1st, 2nd, Central, Murdock and 13th Streets as well as modifications of the existing bridge over Douglas. This project spanned two miles in the heart of downtown Wichita and has resulted in a significant reduction in traffic congestion and delays for the citizens of Wichita.
