Published on 2/25/2010

The Kansas Chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA) will award the Wichita Central Corridor Railroad Grade Separation Project a Transportation Award in the “More than $75 Million” category. The Kansas Chapter will present the plaque for the award at an awards dinner in Hays, Kansas on May 13, 2010. In addition, this project will be forwarded on to National AWPA as a nominated project of the year on the National Level. The Central Corridor Railroad Grade Separation was a four-year project, which involved extending the elevated portion of the tracks by maintaining the elevated grade of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad (BNSF) from the Union Station at Douglas to 13th Street to provide new grade separations at Central, Murdock, and 13th Streets. This project also involved construction of new railroad bridges over 1st, 2nd, Central, Murdock and 13th Streets as well as modifications of the existing bridge over Douglas. This project spans two miles in the heart of downtown Wichita and has resulted in a significant reduction in traffic congestion and delays for the citizens of Wichita.
